FMU Wins Two Games At Black College World Series, Moves Onto Semifinal Round

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Despite being slotted as a No. 5 seed in the opening round of the inaugural BCSG360/Black College Nines Black College World Series, Florida Memorial University's baseball team showed that it is no "Cinder-Fella" team as it cruised to back-to-back victories Wednesday and moved onto the semifinals of the national tournament postseason tournament at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama.

The Lions knocked off 4-seed Rust College (Miss.) 12-2 in their first game of the day then easily handled NCAA Division-II 2-seed Savannah State University (Ga.) in a 9-3 victory.

With its two victories in the opening rounds, FMU moved over to the semifinal round where it will face the winner of Bluefield State College (W. Va.) and Xavier University of Louisiana on Friday, April 30th at 5 p.m.

Due to health and safety protocols, two of the eight teams that was originally scheduled to participate in the tournament had to pull out of the competition. The six remaining teams are now playing double elimination tournament that will conclude May 1st.

If the Florida Memorial wins its semifinal Friday, it will punch its ticket into Saturday's championship game. Otherwise, the Lions would drop into the loser's bracket and have to play in another semifinal game Friday night to stave off elimination.

In the first game against Rust, FMU stayed true to its offensive modus operandi (MO) of getting on the board in the first inning – a feat it accomplished 15 times this season – as it plated 4 runs in the top of the first inning.

Yunior Sanchez started the scoring run with an RBI single to right that brough home Rohandry Javier, who got on base thanks to being hit by a pitch. Jalen Young brought home another run on a sacrifice fly then the Lions benefitted from a Bearcats throwing error, which allowed two runs to come in.

That 4-run lead grew by a run in the top of the fourth and again in the top of seventh thanks to an RBI double by Axel Gomez.

Rust College finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh, cutting Florida Memorial's lead to 6-2.

FMU was able to put a punctuation on its victory in the top of the ninth inning, racking up 6 runs thanks in large part to three Rust College errors and a wild pitch.

Gomez had the most productive day at the plate for the Lions, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Young was 1-for-3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI.

Starting pitcher Juan Hernandez threw 6 and two-thirds innings, giving up just 4 hits and 2 runs – none earned – while striking out five Bearcats batters.

SANCHEZ SHINES AGAINST SAVANNAH STATE
Yunior Sanchez had his best statistical day of the season – going a perfect 4-for-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored – as Florida Memorial used a big second inning to propel it to a 9-3 win over Savannah State University.

Sanchez's fingerprints were all over the second inning, which the Lions entered trailing 0-1. Batting as the leadoff man for the inning, Sanchez singled up the middle. That single started a rally for FMU that included a Javier single, a Luis Rivera 2-RBI single, another single by Sanchez, and an Gomez single that brought Sanchez home for the eighth run on the inning.

Savannah State, the unofficial favorite to win the Black College World Series, plated a run in the bottom of the fifth to cut FMU's lead to 8-2. The Lions pushed its lead out to 9-2 in the top of the sixth after Sanchez hit a double down the left field line that brought Rivera home.

The Tigers did get another run in the bottom of the eighth but Florida Memorial starting pitcher Dawrin Ruiz, who ended throwing a complete game, was able to keep the clamps on Savannah State's bats through the final two innings and cement the final 9-3 margin.

Rivera racked up 3 hits against the Tigers (3-for-5) while matching Sanchez with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Javier, Gomez, Jacquel Perry, and Josue Sanchez all also registered hits in the second game Wednesday.

Ruiz showed great command of his pitches on the mound against the Tigers. The hard-throwing freshman found his spots and gave up just 3 hits and 2 earned runs to Savannah State while striking out 9 batters.
