Late Goal Snips Lions, FMU Falls To Florida National 2-1 Tuesday

HIALEAH, Fla. – After tying the game midway through the second half, thanks to a Johan Godoy goal, Florida Memorial surrendered a goal in the 88th minute that ultimately cost it a season-opening win as the Lions fell 2-1 to host Florida National University Tuesday night at Milander Park.

The Lions (0-1) erased its 1-nil halftime deficit in the 64th minute when Godoy was able to get his foot on a pass in the box and kick a hard shot past the Conquistadors goalkeeper.

Florida National continued to put pressure on the FMU defense, scoring what ended up being the game-winning goal on a two-on-one breakaway. FNU's aggressive play was evident in the 14 shots – 9 on goal – that it got off Tuesday compared to Florida Memorial's 4 shots (3 on goal). The Conquistadors (1-0) also generated more corner kicks than the Lions did Tuesday, finishing with a 6-1 advantage.

In spite of the two goals surrendered, Lions' starting goalkeeper Jesus Tovar finished with 7 saves. Godoy led the team with 2 shots, both on goal, while Xaver Ehrlich and Luis Silva each finished with a shot.

FMU and first-year head coach Daniel Radice will have a bit more than a week off to tinker and prepare before it hosts University of Fort Lauderdale next Thursday (September 4) for its home opener at Dr. Lester Brown Park.
