FMU Looks Dominant Wednesday, Tops Keiser University 3-1

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – What better way to send a message to the rest of the conference than to knock off the conference's preseason No. 1 team in dominant fashion.

Led by standout performances from Biancaliz Cruz and Kimberlie Correa, FMU earned a 3-1 (25-18, 25-14, 22-25, 25-10) victory over visiting Keiser University Wednesday night in the FMU Wellness Center – giving the Lions their first conference win of the season and snapping a seven-game home losing streak to KU.

Cruz finished with a game-high 16 kills and 7 service aces – 4 of which she had in the fourth set to help the Lions pull away from Keiser in the decisive set – and Correa totaled 7 blocks, stymying the Seahawks at the net, while also adding 9 kills.

Earning the big win Wednesday meant a bit more to the Lady Lions, not only because they hadn't knocked off Keiser on their home floor previously, but because they were able to do so in front of a special group of fans.

FMU playersIn addition to the general FMU fan base in attendance, local middle school girls' volleyball program Beacon College Prep attended the game and was even welcomed on the court at the end of the game to take a photo with Florida Memorial's team and coaching staff.

FMU (2-3, 1-0 The Sun Conference) jumped out on Keiser from the onset, turning a 6-2 first-set lead into a 12-4 lead thanks to big kills by Cruz, Correa, and Sammyra Albarran and a handful of errors by the Seahawks. The Lions' largest lead of the first set (11) would end up being the final margin 25-14 after Daphinie Correa earned the set-clinching kill.

The Lady Lions, who will host College of Coastal Georgia this coming Saturday at 2 p.m., had a solid night hitting overall, finishing the match with a .333 total attack percentage – led by Kimberlie Correa's .571 hitting percentage.

Albarran totaled 12 kills; Agustina Busque racked up 22 assists; Alanis Santana added 17 assists; Daphinie Correa had 9 kills; and senior libero Keisha Santana Roldan led the team with 13 digs.

The second set paced as a closer game through first 14 points. Keiser University (10-15, 0-1) held two-point leads at various intervals early that the Lions ate away – ultimately tying the game at 14. FMU would go on a 7-1 scoring run from that point, sparked by Seahawks errors and more solid plays from Cruz to take control of the set, and ended up outscoring KU 11-4 to take the second set 25-18.

Keiser showed signs of life in the third set, jumping out to an 8-3 lead and then a 17-12 lead on the Lions. Florida Memorial did make an attempt at a rally, drawing as close as 21-20, but the Seahawks were able to close the game on a 4-1 run.
