FMU Battles But Can’t Upset Faulkner University Saturday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A bad elixir of poor weather conditions, turnovers, and penalties took its toll on Florida Memorial University Saturday as the Lions fell 34-10 to host Faulkner University on a soggy Billy D. Hilyer Stadium field.

FMU turned the ball over three times – all interceptions – and committed a season-high 15 penalties for a season-high 128 yards in a game that also saw a nearly two-hour long lightning and rain delay midway through the second quarter.

The Lions(0-3, 0-1 Mid-South Conference), who will be on the road again this coming weekend as they travel to face Cumberland University (Tenn.), trailed 21-3 at the second-quarter stoppage and went down 27-3 with just under five minutes left to play before they put together their first touchdown drive of the day – a 5-play, 62-yard series that ended with Christian Edgerson catching a 39-yard pass from Antoine Williams.

Faulkner tacked on another scored in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter to produce the final 34-10 margin.

Williams didn't have his best day Saturday. The sophomore completed 16 of his season-high 41 passes for 144 yards with the touchdown toss to Edgerson and three interceptions.

Edgerson had the best receiving day of his FMU career, finishing with a team-high 4 catches for 64 yards and the fourth-quarter TD grab. Marcus Barthell had 3 receptions for 16 yards while George Young, who was making his healthy return to the Lions' lineup Saturday, had 2 catches for 14 yards and a team-high 69 rushing yards on 20 carries.

Also, Keyshon Gardner had 22 rushing yards and 12 receiving yards for the Lions.

Florida Memorial's offense struggled to find its rhythm early Saturday – like it did this past week in the home opener against University of The Cumberlands (Ky.) – which led to an increase in offensive opportunities for the opponent, which Faulkner capitalized on.

The Eagles (3-0) scored touchdowns on three of their first four offensive drives of the game, allowing them to put Florida Memorial in a 21-3 hole – with FMU's three points coming on a 38-yard Kesnel Baptiste field goal – before the end of the first quarter. Faulkner had been a more pass-heavy team coming into Saturday's game – and the Eagles gained their fair share of yards through the air (212) – but the wet conditions made it turn to its run game more and it produced 197 yards and 13 first downs.

FMU's offense produced a total of 265 yards compared to 409 total yards of offense for the Eagles.

The Lions defense, which came into the game missing multiple starters due to various injuries, did create a turnover – a Darius Conley interception in the first quarter – and did get a quarterback sack from Deandre Lawson Saturday. Freshman linebacker Joshua Mimms tied for the game-high and led the team with 8 total tackles; Devante Lee was right behind him with 7 total stops and 2 tackles for loss; Lemroy Lawrence totaled 6 tackles; and Mickell Ruckerhad 5 total tackles.
