MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University's men's soccer program will play its first home game of the 2021 season Saturday when it hosts Ave Maria University at Dr. Lester Brown Park in Miami Gardens.

In addition to being the Lions' home opener, the game, which is set for a 11 a.m. kickoff, will also be the first conference match of the season for FMU and the Gyrenes.

Florida Memorial (0-3) enter Saturday's game eager to be returning to the pitch since its previous two games were canceled. The last time the Lions played a regular season match was on September 10th at NCAA Division-II opponent Nova Southeastern University – leaving FMU relegated to the practice fields for two weeks.

Lions first-year head coach Daniel Radice hopes the time away will have reinvigorated his team both physically and mentally, especially his more potent scoring threats in Luis Silva and Johan Godoy.

Godoy leads the team in total shots up to this point in the season while Silva is second and they – along with players like Carlos Nieto, Artus Barros, and Edward Moore – will look to be aggressive against a Gyrenes (2-4) team that has given up 14 goals in its four losses this season.

Defensively, FMU will have to keep a defender near Ave Maria sophomore forward Josh Gaeng. Gaeng leads the Gyrenes with 3 goals this season and leads the team in total shots. He's also second on the team in yellow cards drawn, so the Lions could also look to frustrate him with tough man-to-man defense.

Historically, the teams have played each other evenly – splitting their 12 meetings. They even split their past four matchups; but Ave Maria has won the past two – both of which on their home field. The Lions hope that they can get a bit of "home cooking" Saturday and take the advantage in the lifetime series between the programs and earn their first victory since November 2019.
