Godoy Scores Two, Lions Top Ave Maria In Home Opener

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Johan Godoy scored a goal in each half and Florida Memorial University earned its first victory on its home field this season as it earned a 2-0 win over visiting Ave Maria University Saturday morning at Dr. Lester Brown Park Field.

Godoy, the team's leader in total shots this season, put the Lions up 1-0 in the 39th minute when he got control of a loose ball in the box and sent the ball into the back of the net and cemented the team's victory with an 87th minute goal after a perfectly executed give-and-go between he and Quavon White that ended with Godoy finding the back of the net again.

Saturday's win was a tri-fold positive in that it was FMU's first regular season victory since November 2019, the team's first conference win in the same span, and the first win for Florida Memorial first-year head coach Daniel Radice in his tenure leading the Lions.

Florida Memorial (1-3, 1-0 The Sun Conference), which will play its leg in the "Battle of Miami Gardens" this coming Wednesday (Sept. 29) when it travels to face rival St. Thomas University, was the aggressor Saturday and seemed to have benefited from its 15-day respite – thanks to multiple games being canceled – as the Lions appeared to have fresh legs throughout.

FMU took a season-high 17 shots against the Gyrenes with nine coming on goal while also taking five corner kicks. Ave Maria (2-5, 0-1) took just nine total shots (four on goal) and had just one corner kick.

Godoy finished with a game-high 4 shots for the Lions. Michael Del Gaudio and Artur Barros each took 3 shots while Luis Constantini and Luis Silva both took 2 shots. Goalkeeper Jesus Tovar earned his first shutout of the season, finishing with 4 saves.
