FMU Falls To No. 8 St. Thomas University Wednesday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The momentum of earning its first conference victory and having two players earn Sun Conference Player of the Week honors wasn't enough to lift Florida Memorial University Thursday as the Lions fell 2-1 to host No. 8 St. Thomas University on STU's recently-opened Bobcat Turf Field.

FMU (1-4, 1-1 The Sun Conference) trailed 2-0 after the nationally-ranked Bobcats doubled its halftime lead in the 64th minute but cut into the deficit in the 77th minute when Michael Del Gaudio used his head to knock in a cross pass from Jasen Velken.

Del Gaudio's goal – his first of the season – couldn't spark a Lions rally, though as St. Thomas held on to take the men's soccer meeting of the "Battle of Miami Gardens" rivalry between the programs.

Despite the final margin, Florida Memorial did stand toe-to-toe with St. Thomas Wednesday – something that can serve as a morale victory for first-year coach Daniel Radice and his team.

The Lions withstood the 13 shots goal on – 21 total shots – that St. Thomas took Wednesday. Senior goalkeeper Jesus Tovar, the TSC Defensive Player of the Week from this past week, notched 11 saves. Florida Memorial's offensive output wasn't as high as it would've liked, however, as it took just four total shots (two shots on goal) and had just three corner kicks.

Del Gaudio led Florida Memorial with two shots; Johan Godoy had 1 shot on goal; and Luis Constantini had a shot.

FMU will be able to get the bitter taste out of its mouth quickly as it will host Southeastern University Saturday (Oct. 2) at 1:30 p.m.
