Lady Lions Fall At Ave Maria Saturday

AVE MARIA, Fla. – Florida Memorial University's women's soccer team fought throughout but couldn't overcome host Ave Maria University, falling 5-0 in its season-opener Saturday at AMU's Gyrene Field.

The Lady Lions (0-1) fell into an early hole, yielding three goals in the first 20 minutes of the match. FMU's defense did stiffen in the second half but the Gyrenes did tack on two more goals in the final 45 minutes.

Florida Memorial found itself on the defensive for much of the match. Ave Maria (5-1) totaled 29 shots (16 on goal) and 8 corner kicks Saturday compared to 5 shots (2 on goal) for the Lions and just 1 corner kick.

Natalie Puntonet led FMU with 2 shots (1 on goal) while Kelsey Akins, Johana Karbanova, and Anais Lopez each had 1 shot. Also, freshman goalkeeper Hailey Ilijin did finish with a career-high 11 saves in 13 shots faced.

FMU and head coach Anna Maliszewska will have to put Saturday's game behind them and focus their collective attention to the team's September 9th home-opener against Florida National University.
