FMU WBB Falls To No. 2 Southeastern University Tuesday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Junior guard Natalia Leguizamon recorded a game-high 20 points, but Florida Memorial University committed a season-high 29 turnovers as it fell 95-71 to visiting No. 2 Southeastern University Tuesday night in the FMU Wellness Center.

How It Happened
  • FMU fell into an early hole, trailing by 12 at the end of the first quarter through halftime as it played Southeastern even in the second quarter.
  • The Lions saw SEU pull away over the course of the second half, as the Fire's lead expanded to as large as 16 in the third and over 20 in the fourth quarter.
  • Florida Memorial showed its most pluck during the second quarter, cutting Southeastern's lead from 15 down to eight with a 7-0 spurt thanks to five points from Leguizamon.
  • The Lions held the lead three times Tuesday: a 2-0 lead after a Monique Esbrand layup in the opening minute, a 5-4 advantage after am Aliyah-Deen Ahmad three-pointer, and a 10-9 lead following a Keaynna Tolbert breakaway layup.
  • Southeastern outscored Florida Memorial in three of the four quarters.

Inside The Box Score
  • Leguizamon manufactured her team-high by sinking 4-of-8 three-pointers. She also recorded a team-high 8 rebounds, 5 steals, and 2 blocks.
  • Tolbert was the only other FMU player to register double-digit points, totaling 17 points on 6-for-12 shooting.
  • Florida Memorial committed 29 turnovers Thursday but did force the Fire into 26 turnovers.
  • The Lions saw its shooting percentages drop in each quarter and ended up shooting 37.3 percent (22-of-59) from the field and 36.7 percent (11-for-30) from three-point range.
  • SEU scored 33 points off FMU turnovers.
  • The Fire shot 56.1 percent (37-for-66) from the field and 42.9 percent (9-for-21) from three-point range.
  • Florida Memorial was out-rebounded by Southeastern 43-34.
  • Four different Fire players finished with double-figure points totals, led by 6-foot-3 center Angela Perry and 5-foot-11 reserve center Leilah Vigil each scoring 15 points.

Analysis & Notes
  • Leguizamon's eight three-point attempts also set personal season-highs. Her 2 blocks and 5 steals were also season highs.
  • Lions junior guard Jamari Tillman, playing in her second game since returning from a lower extremity injury that kept her out the equivalent of a full season, played 18 minutes off the bench and scored 10 points.
  • Florida Memorial missed its own 6-foot-3 center Da'Marreya Johnson, who missed her third straight game with an upper extremity injury.
  • The Lions were able to disrupt Southeastern's offense with full court pressure but struggled to keep the Fire from scoring around the basket – evident by SEU's 50 points in the paint Tuesday.
  • The loss is FMU's second straight and drops it to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in the Sun Conference.
  • No. 2 Southeastern improves to 19-1 overall and 8-0 in the Sun Conference.
