Lions MBB Edged Out By Ave Maria, Fall 91-87

AVE MARIA, Fla. – After trailing by as many as 12 points in the second half, Florida Memorial University rallied back – even taking a 1-point lead in late – but faltered in the waning seconds and fell 91-87 to host Ave Maria University Saturday in AMU's Donahue Gymnasium.
 
How It Happened
  • FMU's rally began at the two-minutes mark of the second half, as it trailed 86-79 – going on an 8-0 run sparked by Rodney Guillory, who recorded a steal and two layups.
  • Guillory's second bucket during the spurt gave the Lions an 87-86 lead with 12 seconds to play.
  • On Ave Maria's ensuing offensive possession, FMU's Cheikh Kebe was called for a foul, and with the Gyrenes already in the bonus, Ave Maria's Chayse Culpepper went to the free throw line and knocked down two free throws to give AMU an 88-87 lead.
  • The Lions' final two offensive possessions ended in turnovers while Ave Maria sank another three free throws on the final eight seconds to create the final margin.
  • Florida Memorial trailed by eight at halftime (40-32) after the Gyrenes outscored the Lions 12-4 over the final five minutes of the first half.
  • FMU's led by as many as eight in the first half but wouldn't lead again until the 1-point lead later in the second half.

  • Senior guard Corey Benton led Florida Memorial in scoring, turning in 24 points on 9-of-20 shooting.
  • Benton also led the team in assists Saturday, recording 4.
  • Four different Lions players finished with double-digit point totals: Benton, Jacobi Gordon (12), Mubashar Ali (11), and Jethro Tshisumpa (10).
  • AMU's Culpepper led all scorers with 26 points.

  • Lions guard Anfernee King returned to the lineup Saturday after missing the previous game with an undisclosed injury, finishing with 3 points and 3 rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench.
  • After going a career-best 4-of-7 from three-point range this past Thursday, Gordon was unable to hit any of his three three-point attempts Saturday.
  • FMU drops its second straight game and falls to 8-6 overall and 4-3 in Sun Conference play.
  • Ave Maria improves to 11-6 overall and 4-2 in Sun Conference play.
