MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | The Lady Lions took picked up their first conference win of the season with a 70-58 victory over Warner in the FMU Wellness Center. With the win, Florida Memorial improves to 1-1 in Sun Conference competition.
FMU (3-3, 1-1) came out the gates early, taking a 25-13 lead after one quarter of play, converting on 9-of-15 shots from the field and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. However, the Lady Royals responded with a 19-4 run to open the second quarter and took a slight lead.
However, FMU regained composure, outscoring Warner 33-26 in the latter half behind Aliyah Deen-Ahmad's game-high 22 points. The California native was 7-for-9 from the field (2-for-3 from downtown) and converted all six of her free throw attempts. Teammates
Cherelle Washington and
Jasmine Worthy both added 11 points apiece.
"I just told them that we had to bring that intensity that we had in the first quarter," said head coach Gregory Stanback. "It starts on the defensive end, and we have to play together. Warner stayed in their zone defense, although I thought they would come out, but it really allowed us to get our high-low action going," Coach Stanback explained. "Our intensity stepped up, we got some good turnovers and run outs and were able to score some baskets and not just build, but keep the lead."
As a team, Florida Memorial shot 24-of-54 (44 percent) from the field while Warner shot 21-of-52 (40 percent) from the field. The rebound battle was dead even at 33 each, but Florida Memorial forced Warner 25 turnovers which resulted in 23 points. The Lady Lions missed a total of just five free throw shots, converting 18-of-23 as a unit.
Chantel Barnett and
Nyah Johnson both finished with nine points each for the Lady Lions, who improve to 3-3 overall.
The Lady Lions return to action on Saturday, November 19 as they travel to West Palm Beach to face Keiser in conference action. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
