FMU WBB Avenges Road Loss, Tops Ave Maria 84-77 Thursday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Playing in their final regular season home game this season, Florida Memorial University avenged its Tuesday night overtime loss against Ave Maria University and put a victorious stamp on "Senior Night" with its 84-77 win over the visiting Gyrenes Thursday night in the FMU Wellness Center.

How It Happened
  • FMU found itself tied with Ave Maria at 69 with 3:29 left in the fourth quarter.
  • Senior Keaynna Tolbert went on a personal 5-0 run to give the Lions a lead that it would not relinquish.
  • Florida Memorial went up 80-71 with 42 seconds left after another jumper by Tolbert.
  • Ave Maria made what would be an inconsequential three-pointer and free throws in the final seconds before the Lions cruised into the final 84-77 margin.
  • Tolbert scored 13 of her game-high 28 points in the fourth quarter.
  • After leading by 11 at halftime and as many as 14 early in the third quarter, FMU saw its third-quarter advantage completely evaporate and the Gyrenes take a one-point lead (53-52) late in the third.
  • Unlike Tuesday's meeting between the teams when the Lions registered season lows for field goal and three-point percentage, Florida Memorial shot close to its season averages from the field and from three-point range.
  • Four different Lions players scored in double figures Thursday.

Inside The Box Score
  • Tolbert shot a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line to buoy her game-high point total.
  • Junior Natalia Leguizamon finished with 19 points and tied for the team-high with 8 rebounds.
  • Aliyah-Deen Ahmad and Chantel Barnett scored 14 and 10 points respectively while Ahmad had 7 rebounds and 5 assists.
  • AMU's Colleen Shanahan had a double-double of 17 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Gyrenes.
  • Four Ave Maria players finish with double-digit point totals.
  • Florida Memorial totaled 13 steals.

Analysis & Notes
  • Tolbert's 28 points set a new season-high and marked the fifth time that she's eclipsed the 20-point mark.
  • Also, with her performance Thursday, Tolbert scored at least 20 points in back-to-back games for the first time this season.
  • Ave Maria went on a 15-2 run over a five-minute span in the third quarter to take its brief lead.
  • Florida Memorial honored graduate senior Monique Esbrand during a pregame ceremony – gifting the London, England native with a framed varsity letter and flowers.
  • With the victory, the Lions stayed in the No. 2 spot in the Sun Conference standings – holding a half-game lead on three-seed Webber International University.
  • Florida Memorial improves to 15-7 overall and 11-3 in the Sun Conference.
  • Ave Maria falls to 12-11 overall and 5-8 in the Sun Conference.
