Lions Baseball Drops Two Against Warner Saturday, Falls In Weekend Series

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University saw its pitching staff struggle through two games Saturday, ultimately dropping both games of the day's doubleheader and losing the weekend series to visiting Warner University 2-1 at Harry T. Moore Field.

The Lions surrendered a first-inning home run in game one Saturday and never really recovered – losing 8-5. Game two saw Florida Memorial's bat make some noise, just not as much as Webber International's as the Warriors topped FMU 8-4 as the game was called in the seventh inning due to a lack of light.

How It Happened – Game One (WIU 8, FMU 5)
  • FMU's pitching stumbled early, putting two Warriors batters on after hitting one and walking another – setting the table for WIU's Tyren Milliner's three-run homer over the right field fence.
  • The Lions ultimately fell into a 7-1 hole through the top of the sixth inning.
  • FMU ended up using four pitchers, who combined to give up 13 hits and walk eight.
  • Florida Memorial showed resilience in the bottom of the sixth, getting a bit of a rally going with four straight hits – including a 2-RBI triple by Nathan Harris – to cut its deficit to 7-4.
  • Webber tacked on a single run in the top of the ninth.
  • With two on, one out and the Lions trailing by four, Rohandry Javier knocked in a run in the bottom of the ninth to cut it to 8-5.
  • Harris had the chance to play hero, stepping to the plate while representing the potential game-tying run but ended up flying out to center.

How It Happened – Game Two (WIU 8, FMU 4 - 7 Innings)
  • The Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as the top of its order produced four hits – with Harris and Fernando Vila each getting an RBI.
  • Webber International scored two runs in each of the second, third, and fourth innings – taking a 6-4 lead – and plated one run in the fifth and sixth innings to push its advantage to 8-4.
  • FMU's pitchers surrendered six extra base hits in game two and 12 hits overall.
  • After WIU went up to bat in the top of the seventh, the umpires called the game day due to a lack of visibility as the sun had nearly completely set and because the Lions' home field isn't equipped with nighttime lights the game ended in the seventh.

Inside The Box Score – Game One
  • Harris went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.
  • Vila was the other FMU player with multiple hits in game one, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Yunior Sanchez, Javier, and Vila each notched doubles in the first game.
  • Lions starting pitcher Juan Hernandez threw 3.2 innings and had a team-high 4 strikeouts but was credited with the loss.
  • Milliner's only hit of game one was his three-run homer.
  • WIU's Richard Rodriguez led all batters, going 4-for-5.

Inside The Box Score – Game One
  • Sanchez and Javier had nearly identical stat lines; each recording 3 hits, 1 run scored, and 1 RBI.
  • Lions' catcher Rafael Ferrara went 2-for-3 in game two.
  • Vila began game two as FMU's designated hitter (DH) in the batting order but became the team's third pitcher of the game and threw 3.1 innings while still batting in the order.
  • WIU's Drake Kasparek threw a complete game and got the win.
  • Florida Memorial freshman pitcher William Hiciano started game two and was credited with the loss.
