Lions MBB Outlasts Coastal Georgia, Win 87-85 Thursday

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – Senior guard Eric Hester led all scorers with 19 points and recorded a game-high 6 steals as five different Florida Memorial University players finished with double-digit points in tough 87-85 victory over host College of Coastal Georgia Thursday evening in CCGA's Coffin Gymnasium.

Even though CCGA came into the game sports a sub .500 record, FMU found itself tied with the Mariners at 62 midway through the second half. Anfernee King broke the tie with a three-pointer, giving the Lions a lead that it wouldn't relinquish over the final 10 minutes of the game.

Hester shot 8-of-14 from the field and added a career-high 7 assists Thursday. Corey Benton finished with 18 points, 7-foot senior center Mubashar Ali scored 15 points in 18 minutes off the bench, King added 12 points, and Brent Holcombe chipped in with 11 points and 5 rebounds for Florida Memorial – which saw its lead dwindle down to one in the waning seconds before Carington Campbell sank one of two free throws to push the lead back to two followed by a missed Coastal Georgia three-pointer at the buzzer to cement the 87-85 margin.

With the win, the Lions (12-7, 8-4 The Sun Conference) have won three-straight conference games and find themselves in a three-way tie for second place in the conference standings. FMU will be looking to extend its winning streak this weekend when it continues its road trip with a Saturday (Feb. 5) afternoon tilt against Thomas University at 4 p.m.
