FMU Baseball Drops Two At USC-Beaufort Saturday, Loses Weekend Series

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – After a rough outing Friday, Florida Memorial University played a better brand of baseball Saturday – in the resumed game two from Friday and in game three – but it wasn't enough as University of South Carolina-Beaufort handed the Lions two close losses and a series sweep at USCB's Richard Gray Sports Complex.

The Lions trailed 2-1 when play was suspended from game two, took a 4-1 lead, but couldn't keep the Sand Sharks' bats quiet in the middle innings, and ended up falling 8-4. Game three was a closer contest throughout, but it was USCB that came up with the big hit and solid pitching when it mattered most as it handed Florida Memorial a 7-6 loss.

How It Happened – Game One (USCB 8, FMU 4)
  • FMU erased its 2-1 deficit from Friday's suspension point in the third inning Saturday when Fernando Vila got his bat on a hanging pitch and hit a deep shot to right center – scoring two runs at putting the Lions up 3-2.
  • Florida Memorial extended its lead in the top fourth when Luis Ruiz put the ball in play, allowing Joseph Figueroa to cross home plate.
  • The Sand Sharks would ended up scoring two runs in each of the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings – manufacturing the six runs on seven hits.
  • FMU went scoreless after the fourth inning, getting just one hit in that span.

How It Happened – Game Two (USCB 7, FMU 6)
  • Florida Memorial trailed 6-3 heading into the seventh inning.
  • The Lions got a rally going in the seventh, getting Rohandry Javier on thanks to a fielding error then getting back-to-back hits to cut the deficit to 6-4.
  • Rafael Ferrara hit an RBI single to bring FMU within one and it was able to tie the game at 6 when Jensy Doval was hit by a pitch while the bases were loaded.
  • The Lions appeared to have momentum on their side heading into the bottom of the seventh, especially as Alejandro Suarez struck out the first two USCB batters.
  • South Carolina-Beaufort snatched the momentum back in one swing on a solo Leandy Castro home run – giving the Sand Sharks a 7-6 lead.
  • Florida Memorial couldn't generate any viable scoring opportunities in the final two innings, ending both the eighth and the ninth on strikeouts.
  • The Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a 2-RBI single by Axel Gomez.

  • South Carolina-Beaufort improves to 15-16 overall and 3-6 in the Sun Conference.
