Lions Baseball Rallies Late, Falls To No. 11 St. Thomas University Tuesday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University made a furious rally attempt in the ninth inning, cutting an eight-run deficit down to two with the potential go-ahead run at the plate, but saw the comeback come up short as it fell 11-9 to host No. 11 St. Thomas University Tuesday night at STU's Paul D. Mainieri Field.

How It Happened
  • FMU went into the ninth facing an 11-3 deficit after it manufactured a single run in the bottom of the eighth on a Ulises Rodriguez solo home run to left field.
  • The Lions' rally was sparked by a breakdown in pitching and defense for St. Thomas – loading the bases thanks to a pair of walks and a fielding error.
  • STU gifted Florida Memorial a run on the third walk of the inning then Axel Gomez drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to center field to cut the deficit to 11-5.
  • Another walk followed by Yunior Sanchez being hit a pitch gifted the Lions another run.
  • Jensy Doval hit a dinger up the middle for 2-RBI single to bring FMU within 11-8.
  • Luis Velandia followed that with a RBI single over the second base bag to make 11-9.
  • Elijah Baxter stepped to the plate representing the go-ahead run with two on.
  • St. Thomas made its third pitching change of the inning and he was able to get Elijah Baxter to strikeout swinging and end the game.

Inside The Box Score
  • Rodriguez led the Lions, going 3-for-4 with his homer, 2 RBI and 3 runs scored.
  • Nathan Harris and Doval both went 2-for-5 and both had 2 RBI.
  • Florida Memorial batters struck out 10 times Tuesday.
  • FMU skipper Florentino Burgos used six pitchers with Isaias Espiritusantos getting credited with the loss.
  • St. Thomas had two players hit home runs – Alan Caretta and Ezequiel Valdez.

Analysis & Notes
  • Rodriguez hit his first home run of the season and the 10th homer for the Lions overall this season.
  • While St. Thomas and FMU are Sun Conference foes, Tuesday's game was a non-conference contest as it was a midweek single game.
  • The Bobcats are now 20-1 when facing Florida Memorial at home.
  • FMU falls to 11-13 overall.
  • STU improves to 25-5 overall this season.
