Lions Baseball Bats Start Hot, Go Cold Late In 11-6 Loss At Ave Maria In Weekend Series Opener Friday

AVE MARIA, Fla. – After producing six runs in the first two innings to take a slim lead, Florida Memorial University was unable to light up the scoreboard over the final seven innings as host Ave Maria University rallied and took control in the middle innings and ultimately handed the Lions an 11-6 loss Friday in the opening game of the three-game weekend between the teams at AMU's Howie's Ballpark.
 
How It Happened
  • FMU opened the game getting singles from its No. 2 and No. 3 hitters – Ulises Rodriguez and Axel Gomez – setting the table for Nathan Harris to hit a 2-RBI double to center to put the team on the board.
  • Ave Maria plated four runs in the top of the first to retake the lead.
  • The Lions kept its momentum going at the plate in the top of the second, producing six hits in the inning – including a 2-RBI single for Gomez and another RBI hit by Harris – to take a 6-4 lead.
  • Florida Memorial got 10 hits in the first two innings and just one over the remainder of the game.
  • The Gyrenes regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, manufacturing three runs to go up 7-6.
  • AMU extended its lead to 10-6 the following inning and plated an insurance run the bottom seventh to create the final 11-6 margin.

  • Harris had tied for the game-high with 3 RBI.
