Florida Memorial Baseball Splits Doubleheader Saturday; Takes Weekend Series At Edward Waters

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida Memorial University split its road doubleheader at Edward Waters University Saturday – taking the first game with a dominant offensive performance then getting out-dueled in the second – as it earned the overall win in the weekend series, taking two of the three games Friday and Saturday at James P. Small Park.

How It Happened – Game One (FMU 10, EWU 1)
  • After tying the game at one in the top of the second inning, FMU's bats made a bit of noise and EWU's defense broke down in the third and fourth innings as it produced seven runs in the two innings and took an 8-1 lead.
  • The Lions tacked on single runs in the sixth and seventh innings – the former thanks to a bases loaded walk and the latter coming on a passed ball – to put the game out of reach.
  • Edward Waters took a 1-0 lead at the bottom of the first, but that would be the only run it would score in the first game.
  • FMU recorded 14 hits while the Tigers committed three errors in game on Saturday.

How It Happened – Game Two (EWU 10, FMU 9)
  • The Lions took a 9-6 lead in the top of the sixth inning after a Yunior Sanchez 2-run home run.
  • Edward Waters cut into the Lions' lead in the bottom of the sixth getting a walk followed by back-to-back doubles then tied the game at nine on an error by FMU's pitcher.
  • Florida Memorial was unable to get any kind of momentum at the plate in the top of the seventh – having two batters strikeout and the third groundout to first.
  • EWU got its game-winning run as Benjamin Hutchinson – who got on base via a walk – got to second on a HBP, stole third, and was able to score thanks to what was called an error by the Lions' catcher.
  • Florida Memorial committed three errors in game two.
