Lions Baseball Takes Weekend Series Opener 7-3 Over Edward Waters

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Clinging to a one-run lead heading to the ninth inning, Florida Memorial University got a rally going and plated three runs then got back-to-back strikeouts to close the door on host Edward Waters University and earn a 7-3 victory in the opening game of a three-game weekend series Friday night at James P. Small Park.

How It Happened
  • FMU took a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth inning when Rafael Ferrara drew a walk and was able to make his way around the bases thanks to a pass ball and was brought home by a Ulises Rodriguez double.
  • Lions starting pitcher Max Charnin kept the EWU bats in check for much of the night, giving up just three hits in 7.1 innings of work.
  • Florida Memorial came up with a big defensive play in the bottom of the eighth, getting out a jam as Robert Mayorca forced Edward Waters' John Dominguez to ground into a double play as the Tigers had two on with one out.
  • The Lions extended their lead in the ninth by manufacturing a pair of hits and taking advantage of errors by EWU's defense – including getting an extra runner on a HBP and scoring a run on a pass ball.

Inside The Box Score
  • Fernando Vila led FMU by going 3-for-5 with 2 RBI.
  • Aubrey Yarbough and Rodriguez were the other two Lions to notch multiple hits Friday, each recording two.
  • Jalen Young also had 2 RBI Friday.
  • Charnin gave up just one earned run during his 7.1 innings on the mound and struck out four EWU batters as he earned the win.
  • Mayorca pitched 1.2 innings in relief, striking out two and surrendering just one hit.
  • Luis Ruiz, Young, and Rodriguez all had doubles Friday.
  • Florida Memorial totaled 12 hits as a team while Edward Waters had 6.

Analysis & Notes
  • Lions head coach Florentino Burgos switched up his lineup a bit Friday, using Yarbrough at first base; moving Nathan Harris to DH; moving Young to center; and Jensy Doval to right field while giving typical starters Rohandry Javier and Yunior Sanchez a day of rest.
  • For Young, it was his first full game back in the lineup since missing the previous five full games with a lower extremity injury.
  • Florida Memorial snaps its three-game losing streak and improves to 8-5 overall this season.
  • Edward Waters falls to 4-11 overall this season.
