MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University will take its first road trip to a tournament of the season – and in the program's history – this week as it travels to take part in the Fortune Road Spring Softball Tournament beginning Tuesday at the Fortune Road Sports Complex in Kissimmee, Florida.

The Lions are scheduled to play six games over a three-day span – two each day – as one of more than a dozen teams that will be converging in central Florida during what will is spring break for many colleges around the country.

Florida Memorial's slate will begin Tuesday afternoon with a 3:45 p.m. game against Cornerstone University (Mich.) followed by a 6 p.m. game against Saint Xavier University (Ill.). The Lions will go back to work earlier on Wednesday, taking on Pennsylvania State University-Hazleton at 12:30 p.m. and Trinity Christian College (Ill.) at 2:30 p.m. FMU will conclude its time in Kissimmee Thursday with a pair of later games – first a 3:45 p.m. game against University of Saint Francis (Ind.) and a 6 p.m. game against Grand View University (Ia.).

About The Lions (0-2)
  • FMU enters the tournament a well-rested team since it last played a regular season game back on Feb. 12.
  • In their last games, the Lions were dealt a pair of tough losses at rival Edward Waters University – falling 10-1 and 19-1 in the doubleheader.
  • Florida Memorial couldn't generate much juice at the plate, totaling just three hits in the two games.
  • Junior pitcher Bridgette Tuxbury did rack up seven strikeouts in the games against EWU.
  • Lions head coach Pedro Herrera is in his first season at the helm of the program.

Scouting The Opponents
  • Cornerstone University, a 17-17 team in 2021, has started the season 3-1 – including a 3-1 win over NAIA independent Florida National University on March 5th.
  • Saint Xavier University has shown itself to be a solid offensive team through the early part of the year, averaging over five runs per game through nine games this season.
  • Penn State-Hazleton will still be an untested team – playing maybe four games – by the team they face the Lions Wednesday since two of its games were postponed.
  • Trinity Christian has struggled this season – having allowed at least six runs in all but one of its games, surrendered 10 or more runs three times, and been shut out once through eight games.
  • University of Saint Francis, like PSU-Hazleton, will only be five games into its season by the time it takes on FMU. However, USTF will enter the tourney as a 3-1 team that has scored 32 runs in four games.
  • Grand View University might one of the best teams participating in the Fortune Road Tournament this season, entering with a 5-1 record, and having the pedigree of a program that has won over 40 games in three of the past four seasons.

Keys To Victory
  • Florida Memorial must find a way to produce runs – because the team's defense is still gelling, they must support their starting pitchers by giving them leads to protect or at least have them throwing in a competitive game.
  • The Lions must play with confidence during the tournament – the team cannot allow a bad inning to turn into a bad game and a bad game to turn into a bad tournament.
