FMU Softball Wins First Regular Season Game, Routs PSU-Hazleton 13-2; Has Second Game Rained Out

Box Score KISSIMMEE, Fla. – After having its two Wednesday games at the Fortune Road/The Spring Games Tournament rained out, Florida Memorial University made the most of its action Thursday, putting on a dominant performance and coming away with a 13-2 win over Pennsylvania State University-Hazleton – the softball program's first-ever regular season victory.

After the Lions (1-2) took the first game Wednesday, the torrential downpours returned to the Kissimmee, Florida area and drenched the Fortune Road Sports Complex fields forcing tournament officials to cancel the evening's remaining games – including Florida Memorial's scheduled 3 p.m. game against Trinity Christian College (Ill.).

How It Happened – Game One (FMU 13, PSUH 2)
  • Leading 3-1 after three innings, FMU broke open the game in the top of the fourth.
  • The Lions rally began by picking up a run on a throwing error by PSU-Hazleton's center fielder.
  • Florida Memorial then got four straight base hits – including a 2-RBI single by Trinity Hobley.
  • FMU plated six runs in the fourth to take a 9-1 lead.
  • Penn State-Hazleton responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but Florida Memorial got another rally going in the top of the fifth – scoring four more runs to take a 13-2 lead.
  • Lions starter Aashana Francis forced two ground outs and got a strikeout in the bottom of the fifth – put the finishing touches on her complete-game no-hitter as FMU had activated the 10-run mercy rule.

Inside The Box Score
  • Francis earned her first win as a pitcher this season, throwing 5 full, no-hit innings with 4 strikeouts and just 2 walks.
  • Hobley went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI and a run scored.
  • Haylei Grand also had 3 hits Wednesday, finishing 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI.
  • Breana Morales, Megan Perez, Grand, and Hobley all had one stolen base.
  • Lions junior Scarlett Montalvo went 2-for-2 with 4 runs scored.

Analysis & Notes
  • FMU's victory Wednesday is the program's first since it was added to the school's athletic ledger.
  • It's also the first victory for Florida Memorial head coach Pedro Herrera.
  • Francis' pitching performance also registers as the program's first no-hitter.
  • Florida Memorial also set benchmarks for largest margin of victory, most hits, runs scored in an inning, consecutive hits in an inning.
