FMU Baseball Rallies Back, Tops Ave Maria On Wild Pitch Tuesday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Trailing 6-4 heading to the ninth inning, Florida Memorial University tied the game on a 2-RBI single by Jalen Young and was able to top visiting Ave Maria University 7-6 after Ulises Rodriguez raced to home plate unscathed thanks to a wild pitch by Gyrenes pitcher Brandon Willoughby – giving the Lions their seventh consecutive victory on their home Harry T. Moore Field and 10th overall win in their past 11 games.

How It Happened
  • FMU held a 4-3 lead going to the top of the eight – after rallying back from a 3-1 deficit in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a RBI hits by Marlon Cuesta and Rodriguez.
  • Ave Maria regained the lead in the eighth, stringing together a couple hits to take a 5-4 lead on a 2-RBI double and extending that lead to 6-4 on a sacrifice fly.
  • Lions skipper Florentino Burgos elected to move freshman utility player Fernando Vila from first base to the pitching mound during the eighth inning.
  • Vila held the Gyrenes scoreless in the top of the ninth, ending the top-half of the inning with a strikeout.
  • Cuesta led off the bottom of the ninth getting on base after he was hit by a pitch.
  • Rohandry Javier was able to reach on the ensuing at-bat thanks to a defensive error by the AMU shortstop.
  • Rodriguez loaded the bases in the next at-bat with a single through the left side, setting the table for Young's game-tying hit.

Inside The Box Score

Analysis & Notes
  • Although Florida Memorial and Ave Maria are Sun Conference opponents, Tuesday's game did not count towards either teams' conference record.
  • Friday's game got a bit chippy between the squads during the bottom of the fifth after the Lions took exception with the way Ave Maria completed a 4-3 groundout at first. Emotions continued to run high in the top of the sixth after FMU pitcher Ramon Garcia ended the inning with a strikeout and walked off the mound while letting out a primal yell towards the visiting dugout.
  • Florida Memorial's seven-straight home victories is the longest home winning streak in the past two seasons.
  • Tuesday marked 11th game this season the Lions had zero errors.
  • Javier extended his program-leading reached base streak to 34 consecutive games.
  • FMU improved to 22-16 overall.
  • The Gyrenes fell to 26-20-1 overall.
