Lions Baseball Starts Hot, Fizzles Late In Game One; Drops Two Against To. No. 1 Southeastern Friday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Baseball is one of those games that can be cruel in that a team can do a lot of things right, but it still come up short on the score board. Florida Memorial University played – arguably – some of its best baseball of the season Friday but couldn't come away with anything positive to show for it as it fell in both games of the day's doubleheader to visiting No. 1 Southeastern University at Harry T. Moore Field.

How It Happened – Game One (SEU 6, FMU 5)
  • After allowing a single run in the top of the first, FMU was able to find some early offensive juice while also capitalizing on Southeastern defensive breakdowns.
  • Rohandry Javier and Ulises Rodriguez both reached base on a wild pitch and a defensive error respectively.
  • Jalen Young brought them both home on the ensuing at bat with a single to second base.
  • Fernando Vila hit a 2-RBI double to give the Lions a 4-1 lead.
  • SEU plated another single run in the top of the second to make it a 4-2 game.
  • The Lions got a pair of walks in the bottom of the second and Axel Gomez was able to knock in a run on a single to right field, giving FMU a 5-2 lead.
  • After allowing four hits in the first two innings, Southeastern starting pitcher Robb Adams allowed just four hits for the remainder of the game.
  • Both teams remained scoreless through the middle innings as Adams and Lions starter William Hiciano controlled the game.
  • Southeastern cut into FMU's lead in the seventh, tied the game at five in the top of the eighth, and scored the go-ahead run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly.

How It Happened – Game Two (SEU 3, FMU 0)
  • SEU produced a single run in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of a walk by following it with a pair of singles that brought the runner home.
  • Florida Memorial had multiple opportunities to potentially get on the score board but couldn't come up with the right hits to score runs.
  • The Lions had two on with one out in the bottom of the fourth but got a flyout and a strikeout on the ensuing two batters.
  • Similarly, FMU had two on with no outs in the bottom of the sixth ended the inning with a groundout and back-to-back strikeouts.
  • The Fire went up 2-0 in the top of the third and pushed its lead to 3-0 in the top of the ninth.
  • Florida Memorial had two on and the potential tying run at the plate with no one out in the bottom of the ninth, but saw Rodriguez ground into a double play to end the game with the 3-0 margin.
