MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University will play its final home games of the season this weekend, hosting rival St. Thomas University for a three-game series beginning Friday at Miami Carol City Park.

The teams are slated to play a single game Friday at 5 p.m. and conclude the series with a doubleheader Saturday set to begin at 12 p.m.

About The Lions (2-25, 2-20 SUN)
  • FMU played, arguably, its best softball of the season this past weekend as it earned its first conference win (4-2 over Warner University) and loss the other two games of the series by a combined three runs.
  • The victory this past Saturday also marked the first road win for the Lions this season and snapped a 22-game losing streak.
  • Freshman utility/infielder Heidy Olivo earned a Player of the Week nomination, totaling 4 hits and 2 RBI on the weekend.
  • Florida Memorial also got one of its better pitching performances from Bridgette Tuxbury, who earned a win after throwing 6.2 innings while allowing just 2 runs (1 earned) and recording 2 strikeouts.
  • FMU head coach Pedro Herrera has seen his team continue to battle through adversity and attrition, including injuries to multiple players and the growing pains of being a first-year program.

Scouting St. Thomas (16-22, 6-15 SUN)
  • St. Thomas enters the weekend as winners of its past two games – taking two games from Florida National University, a team that recently swept a doubleheader of the Lions.
  • Still, the Bobcats have been a hot and cold team – mostly cold, especially against SUN opponents.
  • Senior infielder Daniela Bautista leads the team in batting average (.392), home runs (6), and RBI (31).
  • STU head coach JC Gutierrez is in his first season leading the team but has worked within the Bobcats' program since 2007.

Series History
  • The weekend's matchups will be the first-ever softball meetings between the programs.

Keys To Victory
  • Florida Memorial must continue to get efficient and effective pitching efforts from Tuxbury or any other starter – either Reygan Nickerson or Aashana Francis.
  • The Lions have struggled to come up with timely hits in many of the games they've fallen in this season; if they can find their "clutch gene" at the plate, they should be more than competitive over the weekend.
