Florida Memorial Softball Set To Face Florida National In Doubleheader Wednesday

AT A GLANCE
FMU Lions (1-18) at Florida National University Conquistadors (21-10)
When: Wednesday, April 6, 2022
Where: Miami, Fla. | Miami Christian High School Field
First Pitch: 12 p.m.
Last Meeting: First Meeting

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – After taking on two nationally ranked conference opponents in back-to-back weekend series', Florida Memorial University is set to square off with another daunting opponent when it travels to face local rival Florida National University Wednesday in a doubleheader at Miami Christian High School beginning at 12 p.m.

About The Lions (1-18)
  • FMU continues to battle through first-year-program adversities, having dropped its series 3-0 to No. 19 Southeastern University this past weekend.
  • The Lions did come away with a couple of morale victories against SEU, though, spoiling its bid at a perfect game, a no-hitter, and a shutout in the final inning of game one of the series.
  • Florida Memorial head coach Pedro Herrera did see the healthy return of two players to the lineup in Heidy Olivo and Aashana Francis. Francis, listed as a pitcher, technically was still active over the past two weeks as she worked as pinch runner and outfielder, but couldn't pitch due to an upper extremity injury. Olivo returned from a lower extremity injury.
  • Zariah Spells leads the team in batting average (.321), runs scored (6), and shares the lead – with McKenna Dawes – for total hits (9).

Scouting Florida National (21-10)
  • Florida National enters Wednesday's doubleheader as losers of its past two games.
  • The Conquistadors dropped both games of a doubleheader to Warner University, snapping a six-game winning streak.
  • Despite the losses to Warner this past week, FNU has had a strong season – knocking off NCAA Division-II Nova Southeastern University, NAIA ranked Southeastern University and Webber International University.
  • Florida National has four players batting over .300 this season, led by sophomore outfielder Gabriela Obando's .389. Obando also leads the team in RBI (31), hits (37), and home runs (5).
  • Conquistadors head coach John Pryor is in his second season leading the program after previously servings as the head softball coach at College of New Rochelle (N.Y.).

Series History
  • Wednesday's games will be the first ever meetings between the programs.
  • The teams were scheduled to play back in February, but the games were canceled due to health and safety reasons.
