Florida Memorial Splits Weather-Altered Doubleheader With No. 19 Keiser Sunday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – After two days of April showers halted and delayed game one of Florida Memorial University's weekend series against visiting No. 19 Keiser University, the teams were finally able to get back on a mostly dry diamond Sunday – with the Lions winning the continuation of game one 6-2 but dropping game two 3-2 at Harry T. Moore Field.

Game one began Friday (April 29) afternoon but was suspended in the bottom of the third inning with Florida Memorial leading 2-0 due to the inclement weather. Games two and three were originally scheduled to be played on Saturday (April 30th) as a doubleheader but the steady rain on Friday and Saturday didn't allow for any games to be played. The teams finished game one and played game two Sunday and will complete the series Monday morning at 11 a.m. at Florida Memorial.

How It Happened – Game One (FMU 6, KU 2)
  • FMU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning Friday, capitalizing on a pair of Keiser errors.
  • The Lions looked ready to extend its lead in the bottom of the third, getting two on – Rohandry Javier and Ulises Rodriguez – with Jalen Young at the plate with no outs.
  • Torrential rain rolled in and suspended the game Friday and the continued wet conditions wiped out any chance to play Saturday.
  • Upon resumption Sunday, Young knocked in Rodriguez and Javier with a single through the left side to put FMU up 4-0.
  • Keiser put a single run on the board in the top of the fifth.
  • Florida Memorial starting pitcher Max Charnin, who started Friday and continued pitching Sunday, had complete control of the game – racking up seven strikeouts.
  • FMU got another small rally going in the bottom of the eighth, generating two hits – including an RBI single by Yunior Sanchez – but also being boosted by another pair of KU errors.
  • Keiser's Tim Bouchard hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth before Charnin forced the final two batters into fly outs.

How It Happened – Game Two (KU 3, FMU 2)
  • A mostly defensive struggle with a solid pitching from both sides, the teams played scoreless through the fourth inning.
  • The Seahawks went up 3-0 in the top of the fifth, finally finding a crack in the FMU defense – loading the bases thanks to a pair of walks and getting on the board with a 2-RBI single by Matt Schrick.
  • Keiser scored its third run of the inning on a squeezing groundout that recorded an out at first but couldn't make the play at home.
  • Florida Memorial was able to respond in the bottom of the inning, getting Luis Ruiz and Sanchez on with singles through the right side and having Nathan Harris turn a pinch-hit appearance into a 2-RBI double down the right field line to make it 3-2.
  • The score remained a run-one Seahawks advantage through the ninth inning.
  • KU threatened in the top of the eighth – getting two on with two out – but Lions reliever Joselito Baez ended the inning on strikeout.
  • Florida Memorial never string together enough hits to get a rally going, ultimately succumbing to the 3-2 deficit.

Inside The Box Score – Game One
  • Charnin threw an elongated complete game, throwing 9.0 innings with 7 strikeouts and zero walks.
  • Young was a game-high 4-for-4 with 3 RBI and a run scored.
  • Rodriguez, Young, and Joseph Figueroa all had a stolen base in game one.
  • KU's Tim Bouchard, the Sun Conference's top hitter, went 1-for-4 with a strikeout and the ninth-inning homer.
  • Seahawks starting pitcher Danny Galvan, who also started Friday and continued pitching Sunday, threw 8.0 innings and had 10 strikeouts.

Inside The Box Score – Game Two
  • Young led the Lions again, going 2-for-4.
  • Ruiz, Sanchez, and Harris each recorded one hit.
  • Neither team was charged with an error in game two.
  • Both teams finished with 5 hits.
  • Isaias Espiritusantos started on the mound for Florida Memorial and threw 4.0 innings with 4 strikeouts while Baez had 4 strikeouts in just 1.1 innings of work.

Analysis & Notes
  • The Lions came into the series against KU able to clinch a berth in the Sun Conference Tournament if they earned a sweep. Having split two games Sunday, they need to win Monday's single game to at least create a potential tiebreaker with University of South Carolina-Beaufort.
  • Young's four hits in game one Sunday was the second time this season he's recorded four hits in a game and it tied him with Sanchez – who also achieved the feat twice – for the team's single-game season high for hits.
  • Charnin became the first FMU pitcher to throw a complete game this season. He also matched his season-high for strikeouts in an appearance.
  • National Baseball Hall of Famer Barry Larkin, Florida Memorial Director of Athletics Jason Horn, and FMU Board of Trustees Chairman and former Lions baseball player William McCormick all attended Sunday's games.
  • Florida Memorial moved to 23-17 overall and 10-13 in the Sun Conference.
  • KU moved to 32-18 overall and 13-10 in the Sun Conference.
