Box Score PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. | In a rematch of last week's contest, the Florida Memorial men's soccer team lost a 2-1 heartbreaker in the final minutes of a non-conference match against the 19th ranked team in the NAIA, Florida National, in the home opener at Broward College South Campus Field.
The first half was highly competitive as both teams had several opportunities but couldn't find the back of the net. The Lions produced three shots and had a golden opportunity to take a lead in the 38th minute, but couldn't capitalize on a penalty kick as Conquistador goalkeeper Victor Ruiz made a sensational save, jumping to the left with outstretched arms to block Lions'
Johan Godoy's attempt from the spot. The save kept the first half scoreless for both teams.
In the second half, a barrage of goals was scored that swayed the momentum of the match each time. FNU got on the board first with a goal in the 65th minute from Martin Marijuan. However, FMU answered back with a timely goal in the 84th minute when
Steve Jean-Pierre shot a deep ball which caught Ruiz off guard and ended up in the back of the net. The late equalizer ignited the Lions, who were destined for the 1-1 draw.
In the final minutes of the match, FNU's Santiago Leaniz beat Lions goalkeeper
Joshua Aranzazu with a remarkable shot to the right side of the goal for the go-ahead goal and the eventual match-winner.
Both teams generated six shots apiece in the second half, which proved to be a thriller. Aranzazu finished with two saves while teammate Godoy finished with a team-high two shots, including one on goal.
The Lions return to action on Sunday, August 28 as they host Lawrence Tech. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. at Broward College South Campus Turf Field (7200 Pines Blvd, Pembroke Pines, Fla.)
