Florida Memorial gets first win of season, dominates Ave Maria 3-0 in conference opener

Lions start conference play with a solid road victory over Gyrenes

AVE MARIA, Fla. | Florida Memorial (1-4-2, 1-0) put on a dominating performance, defeating Ave Maria 3-0 on the road at Gyrene Field for its first victory of the season in the Sun Conference opener.

As a team, FMU finished with a school-record 32 shots on goal, including 14 on target. The Lions put up a record 20 shots on goal in the first half, but the match remained scoreless at the break.

In the second half, FMU scored a total of three goals and took full control of the contest. The first goal came in the 67th minute when Geovannie Lake beat the keeper with a solid strike for the go-ahead goal. In the 80th minute, the Lions struck again as Johan Godoy found Alejandro Caicedo for another goal. Minutes later, Brad Tulley dropped the goalkeeper to his knees, then dodged a trailing defender before scoring his fifth goal of the season, a team-high. Caicedo and Lake each scored their second goal of the season.

Freshman goalie Juan Palacios produced a clean sheet, not allowing any goals and making four saves in the victory.

The Lions return to action on Wednesday, September 28 as they host St. Thomas in Sun Conference action. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Broward College South Campus Field.
