Box Score MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | In one of the most intense matches of the season, the Florida Memorial men's soccer team was eliminated from the SUN Men's Soccer Tournament as it suffered a 1-0 loss to St. Thomas in the semifinal round at Autonation Field.
The Lions took an early lead when
Thomas Cole found
Burak Cuban for a header in the 10th minute; however, the Bobcats wasted no time and found the equalizer just 30 seconds later, tying the match 1-1. FMU and St. Thomas battled back and forth for the remainder of the half and found themselves tied at the break.
In the latter half, St. Thomas got on top quickly and found the go-ahead goal in the 50th minute on a brilliant free kick that wrapped around the FMU wall and into the corner of the goal, just out of reach from an outstretched FMU goalkeeper
Joshua Aranzazu.
For the final 40 minutes, both teams had ample opportunity to score, but both hit the post on numerous occasions, resulting in a thrilling second half.
The Lions were outshot 18-11 while committing 11 fouls as opposed to 22 fouls for St. Thomas.
Senior striker
Brad Tulley led the team with three shots while Aranzazu four saves and allowed two goals.
The loss ends the season for Florida Memorial, who finish with nine wins on the season in first year head coach Alex Nichols' debut at FMU, which is the program's most since 2015, where they earned 10 wins.
