MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial dropped a close 4-3 contest to Fort Lauderdale in their home opener at the Harry T. Moore Baseball Field.
The Lions got behind early in the top of the first when Fort Lauderdale scored two quick runs. However, Florida Memorial answered back in the bottom stanza when
Ulises Rodriguez laid a bunt down that went to the pitcher. The throw to first base was off target, allowing
Jalen Young to head home for the Lions' first run. Moments later, Allen Berrios produced an RBI-single to right field that scored Rodriguez, tying the game at 2-2.
The Eagles added a run in both the third and fourth inning, taking a 4-2 lead before the Lions responded with a run from
Pheron Charlton in the bottom of the fifth, but couldn't produce the game-tying run.
FMU starting pitcher
Max Charnin (0-2) pitched four innings and struck out three batters while allowing four runs to the Eagles.
Jamal Johnson came in relief for Charnin and allowed just one hit in three innings as he struck out two batters.
As a team, the Lions finished with a game-high nine hits.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, February 18 as they host Fort Lauderdale in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. at the Harry T. Moore Baseball Field.
