FMU baseball struggles at home vs. Ft. Lauderdale

Pitching woes get the best of the Lions on a hot Tuesday afternoon.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial was dominated at home to Fort Lauderdale, losing 18-5 in seven innings in their fourth matchup against the Eagles this season.

Coming off back-to-back conference wins in Georgia, the Lions returned to Harry T. Moore Baseball Field to take on the Eagles. The result would not be the same as the prior meetings, with FMU outscoring the Eagles 12-7 over the three-game series, as the Lions got behind early and couldn't recover.

FMU struggled from the beginning, going down 12-0 after three innings. However, three runs scored in the fourth sparked some hope in the Lions dugout, but six more runs from the Eagles, including a three-run home run in the sixth made the lead insurmountable for Florida Memorial to come back from.

Two runs by Gabriel Nunez and Reinaldo Prieto in the sixth and seventh closed the gap to 18-5 but it wasn't enough as the Lions struggled on the mound.

The loss drops the Lions to 13-11 on the year, but are still in a tie for third place in the Sun Conference with Keiser, who currently holds the tiebreaker.

Aaron Knowles got the nod on the mound for the Lions and allowed three six runs on three hits along with two walks and struck out one Eagle batter.. Aubery Yarborough came in relief in the second inning and allowed six runs on three hits along with three walks while striking out one batter.

Mateo Ferguson came in relief for Yarborough and over three innings, allowed seven hits, five runs, three walks and struck out five Eagles. Clemente Orosco came in relief for Ferguson and allowed two hits, one run, two walks and struck out one Eagle.

Jerryk Caceras finished things on the mound for the Lions, striking out one Eagle batter.

FMU returns to action on Friday, March 31st where they head to West Palm Beach to take on Keiser, in a conference series that will determine who grabs sole possession of third place in the Sun Conference. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
