Box Score MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial came up short against the 21st ranked team in the NAIA, Florida National, in a 2-1 nail-biter that endured scattered showers throughout the night at the newly renovated Dr. Lester Brown Park.
The Conquistadors found the back of the net early in the match off a set piece cross from Batista Dominguez that resulted in a diving header from Blas Barrancos in the fifth minute.
However, the Lions answered back with an equalizer in the 24th minute on a brilliant free kick from the lefty
Felix Paberger, placing it perfectly in the right upper corner of the goal, just minutes after returning to the field after a lightning delay. FMU's first goal of the season sparked better play on both ends from the Lions as the contest remained tied at 1-1 apiece at the half.
Following the break, both teams continued to battle back and forth until a slip up from FMU's back line midway through the second half, resulting in a penalty kick and a goal. FMU was unable to find a response after Florida National grabbed the late lead.
The Lions were shown seven out of the ten yellow cards given during the rain-filled contest that witnessed all three goals scored from set pieces.
FMU substitute keeper Miguel Palacio Perez recorded two saves and allowed one goal after coming on in the second half of the competition.
Florida Memorial returns to action on Saturday, August 26 as they face Trinity College at Orange Bowl Field in Miami.
