FMU earns 1st win of season in 4-2 victory over PBA in Labor Day Special

Coach Alex Nichols gets first career victory as FMU head coach.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | The FMU Lions defeated NCAA DII opponent Palm Beach Atlantic 4-2 in a Labor Day Special that proved to be an action-filled contest, earning their first win of the season.

During the match, 26 total fouls were called, including 14 for the Lions.

FMU allowed a goal early in the game before finding the equalizer in the 22nd minute after Brad Tulley was taken down from behind in the box. Moments later, Florida Memorial capitalized on the foul and equalized with a penalty kick as Felix Passberger scored his second goal of the season. Both teams battled back and forth holding the game at 1-1 heading into the break.

In the second half, the Lions quickly asserted their dominance with a goal in the 49th minute from Jeremiah Johnson. FMU extended the lead seven minutes later when Matthis Couinet found Thomas Cole who beat the Sailfish goalkeeper with a solid strike to get his first goal of the season. Geovannie Lake stepped onto the pitch in the 60th minute, and just seconds later, extended FMU's lead to 4-1 with a perfect pass from Thomas Cole.

PBA caught the Lions off guard with their second goal of the match five minutes later, but it wasn't enough as they fell to FMU on Labor Day.

Florida Memorial's back line led by Tibo Gobert stood strong to hold on to the lead. FMU goalkeeper Batony Ilyes made one save and allowed two goals in the victory over PBA.

FMU finished the game with a total of nine shots, with seven on frame.

The Lions return to action on Wednesday, September 13 as they host #9 Keiser University in the conference opener. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. at Dr. Lester Brown Park.
