MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Latavious Mitchell scored the game-winning basket with just seconds remaining in No. 22 FMU's 63-62 victory over St. Thomas in the Battle of Miami Gardens at the Fernandez Family Center.
Mitchell had a monster game and finished with a team-high 15 points while grabbing 11 boards in the narrow victory. Teammate
Jaiden Guice added 12 points for the Lions, who improve to 1-1 in SUN conference play.
While the Bobcats produced four scorers in double-figures, it wasn't enough as Florida Memorial closed out the game on a 14-5 run in the most crucial moments of the contest that was ignited by a sensational flush from Philly native
Derrius Ward, who has proved to be a major problem for most opposing guards.
As a team, FMU generated 34 points in the paint compared to just 28 for St. Thomas. The Lions were able to capitalize off of 20 Bobcat turnovers, scoring 16 points off of STU's miscues.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, January 13, as they host College of Coastal Georgia. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. at the FMU Wellness Center.
