FMU dismantles New College of Florida 6-0 for 1st SUN Conference victory of the year

First year head coach Coach David Martinez earns his first career SUN Conference victory.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | The Lions scored a season-high six goals en route to their first SUN Conference victory of the year, as they crushed New College of Florida 6-0 at Dr. Lester Brown Park. The win marks the first career SUN conference victory for first year head coach David Martinez.

Florida Memorial University played free-flowing soccer, using quick one-touch passing to make their opponents constantly chase behind. The Lions wasted no time as Rafael Coronado scored the first of his two goals in the 16th minute on an excellent pass from Frank Sanchez. Coronado found the back of the net for the second time in 12 minutes, this time receiving a perfect pass from Luis Gutierrez, giving the Lions the early edge as they carried a 2-0 lead into halftime.

In the latter half, speedster Adam Gonzalez snatched the ball from a Banyan defender inside the 18-yard box then beat the keeper for his first goal of the match. Moments later, Gonzalez stole the ball form Banyan's goalkeeper Mathis Leveque and found a wide open Johan Arevalo for another Lions goal, extending their lead to 4-0.

Arevalo later scored his second goal of the match in the 69th minute before Carlos Montenegro generated a beautiful left-footed strike outside the 18-yard box that beat Leveque for the final goal of the match.

FMU goalkeeper Ricardo Delgado Villalobos produced a clean sheet, allowing zero goals with one save on the afternoon.

The Lions return to action on Saturday, October 5 as they travel down the street to face crosstown rival No. 1 St. Thomas in the Battle of Miami Gardens. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Autonation Field.
