AUSTIN, Texas | Florida Memorial University's women's basketball team opened their season with a dominant 83-50 victory of Huston Tillotson in Austin. Kevin Herod earns his first win as the head women's basketball coach of FMU with a 33-point victory over the Rams.
The Lions controlled the game from start-to-finish, holding the lead for all but 20 seconds of the game. The team scored 20-plus points in three of the four quarters, including a 24-point performance in Q1. The team went 30-of-71 from the field and 9-of-22 from beyond the arc and collected 51 rebounds.
Senior
Alyza Winston led the team in scoring with 16 points, going 6-of-12 from the field and 3-of-7 from the three-point line, while adding on four rebounds and two steals. Wing
Agar Farres Garcia added 12 points for FMU, going 5-of-8 from the field and collecting 14 rebounds, while point guard
Kamesha Moore scored 10 points and went 3-of-4 from the three. Senior
Ebony Black-Smith led the team in steals with four, while graduate student
Brittany Rivera chipped in seven rebounds for the Lions.
The win starts FMU off at 1-0 on the season.
The Lions return to action Saturday, November 2, when they'll take on Texas College in game two of the Tiffany Jackson HBCU Classic. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. in Austin, Texas.
