FMU softball splits doubleheader with FNU in 2 thrilling contests

Lions are off to their best start in program history with a 5-1 record.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial held off a late push in game one of the doubleheader before giving up a late rally in game two against Florida National, splitting the doubleheader at Walt Frazier Park at Carol City.

The loss in game two was FMU's first stain of the year, moving them to 5-1 on the season, still good for best start in program history under the direction of head coach CJ Combs.

Game 1
FMU 2 - FNU 1

In the first inning, center fielder Ciara Justice produced an RBI-single down the right field line that brought home fellow Lion Ciera Taylor for the first run of the game. In the second, freshman Leneaya Silva hit a deep solo shot to left field that ignited the home crowd. Her home run ended up being the game-winning run as FNU later scored a run in the fifth inning.

The Conquistadors were one play away from tying the game in the top of the seventh as they had a runner on third, but a slew of stellar defensive plays saved the day for FMU. Lions shortstop Heidy Olivo made a clutch diving catch to get one out, then a perfect throw from Lions catcher C. Taylor to throw out an FNU runner attempting to steal second created another timely out for the Lions.

FMU pitcher Gabriela Pinto (2-0) earned her second win of the season, allowing seven hits and just one earned run and she struck out one Conquistador in the contest.

Game 2
FMU 2 - FNU 3

Florida Memorial took an early lead in the second inning when Mariana Gongora produced an RBI-double to left center that brought home Justice for the first run of the game. In the third, FMU third baseman Breanna Reyes generated an RBI-single that scored Taylor, giving the Lions a 2-0 lead. However, Florida National a run in the fourth inning, then added two crucial late runs in the sixth inning on a two-run RBI that lifted FNU over FMU.

FMU pitcher Emma Silva struck out three batters and allowed just one earned run, but was credited with the lone loss of the season for Florida Memorial.

The Lions return to action on Tuesday, February 13 as they play host to Fort Lauderdale. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m. at Walt Frazier Park at Carol City.
