FMU baseball dominates Fort Lauderdale 9-0 on senior day

Lions honored seven seniors at Harry T. Moore Baseball Field.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial baseball dominates Fort Lauderdale, winning 9-0 on its annual senior day to take the series victory. Ulises Rodriguez, Luis Ruiz, Ricardo Alvarez de Lugo, Kyle Morrison, Nathan Harris, Genesis Nunez, and Alejandro Fernandez went out on top as Lions at Harry T. Moore Baseball Field.

Just as they did all series, the Lions took the opening lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. Center fielder Pheron Charlton hit a 2-RBI double that scored Nunez and Rodriguez before Ruiz rewarded Charlton with his first run of the game off a ground-out RBI. The Lions kept their foot on the gas in the bottom of the fifth with four runs to extend their lead to 7-0 over the Eagles. Left fielder Raymond Rivera hit his third home run of the season to kick off the inning, followed by a Ruiz RBI double that scored Nunez for his second run of the afternoon. Harris capped off the bottom of the fifth with a 2-RBI single that scored first baseman Eduardo Perez and Ruiz for FMU.

Senior day spectacles continued in the bottom of the sixth when Charlton got his third RBI of the day, which scored freshman Daniel Sanchez to extend the Lions lead to 8-0. Catcher Alejandro Fernandez put the final dagger in Fort Lauderdale when his RBI walk scored Rodriguez for the Lions ninth run of the day, completing the senior day domination. FMU outhit the Eagles 12-5 over the course of the contest.

FMU pitcher William Hiciano (6-3) secured his sixth win of the season. In six innings, he allowed only two hits while striking out seven Eagles. Junior Jamal Johnson finished pitching duties for FMU and in three innings, allowed three hits and struck out one Eagle.

The win advances FMU to 19-21 on the year, with one series to go in the season.

The Lions return to action Thursday, April 25, where they'll travel to St. Thomas for game one of the Battle of Miami Gardens. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Paul Demie Mainieri Field.
