FMU defeats St. Thomas 8-6 in regular season finale

MIAMI GARDENS. Fla. | Florida Memorial baseball concluded the 2024 regular season with an 8-6 victory over St. Thomas. Despite losing the series in yesterday's doubleheader, FMU ended the season with a win over the Bobcats in the Battle of Miami Gardens.

St. Thomas scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. FMU's Luis Ruiz kicked off a three-run top of the third with an RBI single that scored designated hitter Raymond Rivera for the Lions first run of the afternoon. Scoring continued after a hit by pitch on Nathan Harris scored third baseman Genesis Nunez to break the 1-1 tie in FMU's favor. Ruiz capped off the third inning with a run scored off an error from the Bobcats, giving the Lions a 3-1 lead.

FMU kept their foot on the gas in the following inning when Ruiz hit his second RBI single of the game, this time scoring center fielder Gianni Tusa. Nunez scored his second run of the day to extend the Lions lead to 5-1 over St. Thomas. The Bobcats added three runs to the score to cut the lead to 5-4 after four innings. The Lions resumed scoring in the top of the sixth, when junior Ivan Zambrano's RBI single scored Rivera for his second run of the game. Catcher Alejandro Fernandez followed up in the top of the seventh with a home run to put the Lions up 7-4 over the Bobcats. A Harris ground-out RBI scored Ruiz for his second run of the afternoon, and while St. Thomas added two runs in the bottom of the inning, the Lions held on to take the 8-6 victory in the regular season finale.

Junior Jamal Johnson (13-4) secured the victory for FMU, allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out two Bobcats.
