MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Florida Memorial's quest to defend their Black College World Series continued as they defeated Wiley 3-0 in the elimination round. After the game was stopped the previous night due to inclement weather, the contest resumed the following morning in the bottom of the sixth, where FMU claimed victory over the Wildcats. Interim coach
Andre Payne received his first win as head coach of the FMU baseball team.
Scoring was barren for the opening four rounds, but FMU broke the scoreless tie when third baseman Reinaldo Prieto's RBI single scored senior Luis Ruiz in the top of the fifth. Up 1-0 in the top of the eighth, the Lions put together a crucial inning, with two runs from seniors Nathan Harris and Ruiz, to extend their lead to 3-0. FMU played lights-out defense, allowing only six hits from Wiley to take home the victory and advance to the next round.
FMU pitcher Max Charnin (4-5) earned the victory, allowing three hits and striking out two Wildcats. Senior Ricardo Alvarez de Lugo (S, 1) earned the save, allowing three hits and striking out six Wildcats in the contest.
The win advances FMU to 21-25 on the season.
The Lions return to action Friday, May 10, where they'll take on Edward Waters in a rematch of game one of the Black College World Series. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Montgomery, Ala.
