LEBANON, Tenn. | Florida Memorial University football team had its unbeaten streak snapped with a 47-35 loss to Cumberland in Tennessee. The Lions drop to 1-1-1 on the year as they get prepared for their biggest test this season in next week's conference opponent, the St. Thomas Bobcats.
In the opening drive, FMU running back
Walter Wilbon continued his historic season with a 54-yard touchdown run to open the game. After a response from the Phoenix, FMU quarterback
Cedquan Smith found
David Studstill in the end zone for a 9-yard touchdown, giving the Lions a 14-7 lead in the first quarter. With time winding down in the opening quarter,
Darius Conley intercepted a pass on the goal line that was waived off due to an offside penalty, giving life to Cumberland who eventually tied the game at 14 apiece.
In the second quarter, Smith exited the game as sophomore quarterback
David Buggs took over the helm for the Lions. On a third and eight play, the sophomore quarterback threw an interception that was returned 44 yards for a touchdown as Cumberland took their first lead of the ball game and never looked back, outscoring FMU 33-21 for the remainder of the contest.
Buggs finished the game completing 18-of-31 passes for 251 yards and one touchdown, but threw three costly interceptions while teammate Wilbon finished with 178 rushing yards to go along with three rushing touchdowns.
Overall, the FMU offense was electric, producing over 500 yards of offense; however, the Lions defense allowed over 400 yards to Cumberland.
Studstill had a monster game, generating 10 catches for 156 yards and a touchdown reception, while fellow Lion
Jakai Linwood finished with a team-high 12 total tackles in the loss. Conley and teammate
Antwan Davis both added eight tackles each for the Lions, while Davis finished with the team's only sack.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, September 28 as they host St. Thomas in the Battle of Miami Gardens. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Betty T. Ferguson Stadium for FMU's conference opener.
