MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | RV Florida Memorial University played a hard-fought game against No. 2 Keiser, but ultimately fell to the Seahawks 49-28 at Betty T. Ferguson Stadium. Despite the loss, FMU kept Keiser honest for all four quarters, never letting the game go out of sight in their closest match against KU.
The Lions opened in the best way possible, when running back
Jerodd Sims kicked the jets for a 71-yard touchdown on the first play to take the lead. The defense held Keiser to a field goal on their first drive, an opportunity FMU took advantage of with a great drive that ended in a 9-yard touchdown run from
Nygel Osborne to give FMU a 14-3 lead. Keiser went on to take a 17-14 lead in the second quarter, and FMU had a chance to retake the lead, going down to the Keiser six yardline. However, a costly fumble, recovered by Keiser, erased a chance to re-take the lead, and Keiser took advantage and extended their lead to 24-14. The Lions quickly went back to work, with Sims second touchdown of the day to close the gap to 24-21, but Keiser re-opened the lead to 34-21 going into the half. The Lions offense failed to get going in the second half, getting outscored 15-7, with Sims 29-yard touchdown catch from
Tyquan Wiggins being the lone score.
Wiggins finished the day 11/24 for 172 yards, along with one touchdown and two interceptions. Sims was dominant on the ground, rushing for 203 yards on 19 carries and two scores, averaging 10.7 yards per attempt, along with three catches for 62 yards and a touchdown. Osborne finished the day with nine carries for 53 yards and a touchdown, averaging 5.7 yards per attempt.
Jalen Holly led the team in receiving, with four catches for 90 yards. On defense,
Darius Stokes and
Jayden Haynes co-lead the team in tackles with six, with Haynes adding a tackle for loss in the process. Khari Field and
Russell Stroud made big plays on the defense, with each coming home with an interception on the Seahawks. On special teams,
Sean Egloff went perfect in PATs, going 4/4 on extra points.
The loss drops FMU to 2-3 on the year and 1-1 in conference play.
The Lions return to action Saturday, October 18, when they'll host Warner for Homecoming. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Betty T. Ferguson Stadium.
