Lions Take Home Series Opener Against Fort Lauderdale 13-6

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial University defeated Fort Lauderdale 13-6 in game one of the series at Harry T. Moore Baseball Field. The Lions opened the game with a six-run bottom of the first, and scored in all but three innings.

In the bottom of the first, Daniel Lopez scored the first run off an Eagle error, and was quickly followed by Armando Ramirez, who scored off a walk by Christian Carratala. Don McKnight III continued the scoring, hitting a 2 RBI-single that sent home Leal and Wilber Puertas. Nathan Martinez rounded the bottom of the first with a 2-RBI that scored McKnight and Carratala.

In the second, FMU scored again, off a home run by Ramirez. Fort Lauderdale scored three runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but FMU extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Justin Martinez had a 2-RBI homer that scored Puertas. UFTL scored in the top of the seventh, to which FMU responded with a run from Puertas, his third of the day. Fort Lauderdale scored twice in the top of the eighth, before FMU answered in the bottom with runs from Pheron Charlton, Daniel Lopez, and Ramirez to secure the victory.

Starting pitcher Wade Francis got the win, and in five innings, allowed six hits, two earned runs, and three walks, while striking out six Eagles. Juan Girado was next up, and in 2.2 innings, allowed two hits, two earned runs, and struck out one Eagle. Daniel Perruc was next and allowed one hit, one earned run, and one walk. Roger Garcia finished the day on the mound, and in 1.1 innings, allowed one walk and struck out two Eagles.

The win moves FMU to 3-3 on the season.

FMU returns to action, Saturday, February 14, for the doubleheader finisher to the Fort Lauderdale series. First pitch is slated for noon at Harry T. Moore Baseball Field. Purchase tickets using this link here, and students who show their student ID get free entry.
