MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial University held a press conference on Thursday, April 9, introducing new head men's basketball coach,
Anthony Anderson, at the FMU Wellness Center.
Students, staff, faculty, alumni, and members of the community came to hear from Anderson, as well as FMU president, William McCormick and Director of Athletics, Chandra Dorsey-Felton, on the future of the program, and what went into the hiring of FMU's newest head men's basketball coach.
"This is truly a special day for Florida Memorial University, our athletic department, and our men's basketball program," said Dorsey-Felton. "Coach Anderson is not just a coach, he is a leader that knows how to build programs the right way. I'm proud today to know we're bringing a man that embodies everything that this university is moving towards."
Dorsey-Felton highlighted the qualities that made Anderson the right man for the job. "When it came time to make this decision, it was important to find someone who understands what it takes—not just to coach, but to lead, to build, and to truly develop student-athletes. He is a man of integrity. He leads with purpose. And he understands that this role is about more than basketball—it is about developing young men who will succeed in life."
Coach Anderson talked about his vision for the men's basketball program, during his introduction speech. "We're going to put this program back on the map," said Anderson. "Continue to win championships and we're going to do it the right way. I don't play when it comes to academics. If you're not doing what you're supposed to, you will come off the court."
When asked about what made Anderson stand out, Dorsey-Felton said "We wanted someone who had experience and can develop not just basketball players, but young men. We needed someone with a reputation for high integrity and Coach Anderson's name kept rising to the top of the list."
Anderson was asked about his short and long term visions for the program. He said "The goal every year is to win championships. President McCormick just mentioned it, we're not here for a rebuild, we're here to give back to the community and keep it going."
"We are the hometown HBCU," said McCormick. "Since 1968 this community has stood with us. I think it's time for us to stand with them." President McCormick emphasized the importance of further integrating FMU with the community, and endorsed Anderson's vision of integration between FMU and the community of Miami Gardens.
Anderson previously coach at the University of Fort Lauderdale, where he lead the team to over 100 wins and multiple national rankings. He'll take over the team that has won the SUN Conference championship twice in the last five seasons.
FMU finished the 2025-26 season with an 18-11 record. They earned two ranked wins and made the SUN Conference tournament for the third-straight season, as the No. 4 seed.
