(MIAMI GARDENS, FLA) -- The Florida Memorial University women's soccer program is set to being the 2019 season on the road against Florida College, Saturday, August 24.
The Lions, under second-year head coach
Marino Torrens Jr., are excited to begin competition and are looking forward to a different narrative than what was recorded the year prior.
"It's good to finally see an opponent on the other side," said Torrens. "We've been working hard at practice since coming back to campus and now it's time to show it on the field."
Coach Torrens is being assisted by
Anna Maliszewska,
Dillon Vallejo and
Rubiel Vazquez.
The Lions have six returners ready to hit the field this weekend and although their roster size is small going into competition they are prepared to head home with the victory.
Senior
Jazmine Rosas and junior
Thalia Leal finished in the top five for the Lions last year with points scored. Rosas scored one goal and also added an assist while Leal too scored a goal.
This is also the season opener for the Falcons and the first time the two teams will meet in competition. The Lions were 2-11-1 last season while Florida College finished the year 7-8-2.
The Falcons finished last season with 38 total goals and 27 assists. Key returner for FC is sophomore Mashell Rodriguez who led her team with 32 points off of 12 goals and eight assists.
They are being coached this year by a brand new staff led by Joanie Delbeck and assisted by Rich Lovett and Austin Hamby.
