MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Holidays and sports a synonymous. And it's not uncommon that college basketball teams spend the winter holidays on the road taking part in a tournament.

Florida Memorial University's men's basketball team is no different.

The Lions will be making a 12-hour road trip to Montgomery, Alabama to take part in the "Battle At The Beach" Tournament, where they will play three games in three days beginning Friday.

It'll be the first time that FMU participates in the "Battle At The Beach", which is serving as a de-facto replacement or makeup tourney for the canceled Jimmy Faulkner Classic. The Faulkner Classic was scheduled for November 7-8 but its men's bracket was wiped away due to COVID-19 concerns of multiple teams that were set to participate.

The Battle At The Beach will feature six teams – including three from The Sun Conference – and will take place at Faulkner University's Tine W. Davis Gymnasium. Florida Memorial, William Carey University (Miss.), Keiser University, Thomas University (Ga.), Louisiana State University-Alexandria, and Faulkner will play a three-day round robin.

Fans will be able watch the Lions – and the entire tournament – via a free online live stream.

Florida Memorial (1-2) will open the tournament's when it takes on LSU-Alexandria Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. The Lions will return the hardwood Saturday evening, when takes on host Faulkner in the day's nightcap at 7:30 p.m. FMU will play its third game of the tourney Sunday afternoon against William Carey – set for a 2 p.m. tip-off.

The road trip should serve as a great litmus test for FMU head coach Ansar Al-Ameen's squad. Florida Memorial is itching to get back on the floor after having its Nov. 21 game against Keiser University postponed due to COVID-19 concerns for the host Seahawks.

The Lions' last live action was an 88-82 loss at Ave Maria, a game that saw FMU shoot better from the field than its opponent but just couldn't come up with the defensive stops needed as the game hung in the balance.

Florida Memorial will face a couple of dynamic individual scorers this weekend. In the first two games, the Lions will have to slow down LSU-Alexandria guard Jordan Adebutu, a 6-foot-2 senior averaging 24.5 points per game, and Faulkner's 6-foot-3 junior guard C.J. Williamson puts up 19.5 points a night.

While William Carey doesn't have a dynamic scorer like Adebutu or Williamson, the Crusaders do have four players that average double digit points each night and do possess the size on the wing to matchup with the Lions.
