Washington’s 22 Not Enough For FMU To Rally Back On LSU-Alexandria

Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Florida Memorial University got a season and game-high 22 points from Aubrey Washington but it wasn't enough for it to overcome Louisiana State University-Alexandria, falling 65-61 Saturday afternoon in the opening game of the Battle At The Beach Tournament.

The 5-foot-10 senior guard was an efficient 8-of-11 from the field (4-for-6 from three-point range) in just under 35 minutes of action, but the Lions fell into a 40-28 halftime hole and spent much of the second half playing "catch up".

Florida Memorial did actually catch up – tying the game at 50 with 7:38 left to play – and even took leads at the 7:03 mark (52-50) and at the 3:12 mark (58-57 on a three-pointer by Washington). But the Lions went cold over the final three minutes, allowing the Generals to outscore them 8-3 in that span and take home the 65-61 win.

While the Lions won the rebound battle by a sizable 52-40 margin and shot better from the field than LSU-Alexandria did, they put themselves behind the proverbial eight ball by turning the ball over 24 times Friday compared to just 6 turnovers for the Generals.

FMU (1-3) got 14 points and six rebounds from junior forward Quincy Urbina; a 10-point, 11-board double-double off the bench from senior center Mubashar Ali; and 12 rebounds from Ebenezer Aboagye in just 17 minutes off the bench.

The Lions did a good job defensively on LSU-Alexandria's leading scorer –guard Jordan Adebutu, who came into Friday's game averaging 24.5 points per game, holding the senior to 15 points on 6-of-17 shooting.

Florida Memorial will be back in action Saturday night, taking on host Faulkner University in the second day of the Battle At The Beach tourney at Tine W. Davis Gymnasium.
