MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University will be looking to put a foot in the ground and reverse its course – having loss its previous two matches – when it hosts Sun Conference foe Warner University Wednesday night in the FMU Wellness Center.
Wednesday's match, which is set for a first serve of 7 p.m., will be open to Lions fans. However, fans will be subject temperature checks prior to entry into the Wellness Center and will be required to wear face coverings while inside and must adhere to the markings that promote social distancing in the bleachers.
After winning its first two matches of the season, FMU (2-2, 2-2 Sun Conference) has dropped its past two matches – one at home and a road tilt this past Saturday at Webber International University.
But, both of the Florida Memorial's two losses this season had unique contexts. The already-shorthanded Lions went from "nine strong" down to eight – after middle blocker
Azmabeth Infante missed the game with an upper extremity injury – and just couldn't overcome having to play with such shuffled lineups. The most recent loss though, as Lions head coach
Marrita Crockett-Moulton described it, was just a lack of attention to detail by her squad.
"We just made too many mistakes. You saw when we were locked in, we were able to take care of Webber [International]," the second-year coach said, referring to her team winning the third set 25-16.
Cutting down on errors and mistakes will go a long way towards a Lions victory Wednesday, as will the continued strong play of sophomore
Biancaliz Cruz. Cruz, a 2019 First Team All-Sun Conference selection, has totaled a team-leading 20 kills through the previous two matches while also leading the team in service aces in that span.
When Florida Memorial welcomes Warner University Wednesday, it'll be going up against a team that's also looking to turnaround its recent fortune. The Royals enter Wednesday's match winless (0-2, 0-2), including a 0-3 sweep at the hands of Keiser University this past Saturday.
While Warner University owns the all-time series against the Lions, under Crockett-Moulton, Florida Memorial is undefeated against the Royals – a trend FMU hopes to continue Wednesday.
