MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University will go head to head in a mid-week matchup against neighborhood rival St. Thomas University in the "Battle of Miami Gardens" Wednesday afternoon at the STU Soccer Field.
Wednesday's match will be the first of two against the Bobcats this season and the third overall game for the Lady Lions. It'll also be the 15th all-time women's soccer meeting between the schools since they began to play in 2011.
Unfortunately for Florida Memorial, Wednesday's match was changed to a road game after it learned its home field was still unavailable due to county ordinances. It's yet to be determined if the second meeting between the teams – originally a home game for the Bobcats set for November 7th – will be flipped.
FMU and first-year head coach
Logan Langseth come into Wednesday's game having suffered a tough loss at the hands of No. 1 ranked Keiser University this past Saturday. The Lions have shown flashes of good soccer, but they haven't been able to put it together for a long enough stretch to capture their first win of the season.
It will be vital for Florida Memorial (0-2, 0-2) to try to maintain possession against the Bobcats in order to have a chance to win. As fans saw in Saturday's game against Keiser, the Lady Lions struggled in
keeping possession and were playing out of their own third of the field for a majority of the game. Not being able to retain possession and establish their game resulted in the Seahawks getting 46 total shots, 25 on goal, with 12 of the 25 being saved by FMU goalkeeper
Kacy Zimmerman.
Having to start the season with some of the restrictions dealt by the outside world and working with a largely new roster, it's been a struggle for the Lady Lions to establish their footing but the staff and players remain optimistic and steadfast in their preparation each day.
Standing in FMU's way Wednesday will be a St. Thomas (2-1, 1-1) team that has won its past two games and is paced by freshman midfielder Miranda Ferradaz – who leads the team in goals, shots, and game-winning goals.
