Perez Shines, FMU Snaps Winless Streak Monday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Powered by freshman midfielder Donna Perez's two goals, Florida Memorial University's women's soccer program snapped a 34-game losing streak that spanned across four seasons with a 2-1 win over rival Edward Waters University Monday at Dr. Lester Brown Park.

The Lions took a 2-0 lead on EWU in the 72nd minute after Perez capitalized on an error by the Tigers' goalkeeper but saw Edward Waters cut the lead in half three minutes later by picking up a "trash" goal in the box in the 75th minute.

Florida Memorial (1-12) clung to the lead over the final 15 minutes of the game, getting solid play from freshman goalkeeper Hailey Ilijin and the defenders to keep Edward Waters at bay and secure the program's first win since the 2018 season.

Once the officials blew the final whistle, FMU's players shared hugs in celebration and they received cheers from a spirited crowd that was a bit more robust than usual as a result of it being Senior Day for the Lions.

Ironically, Monday's (October 25th) win came almost exactly three years to the day from the last Lions victory. Florida Memorial defeated Trinity Baptist College 1-0 on October 26, 2018 in Jacksonville, Florida. Also, while Florida Memorial was awarded a forfeit home win over Webber International University during the 2017 season, Monday's home victory was FMU's first since it defeated Ave Maria University 1-0 on October 27. 2016.

After the teams played a scoreless first half, Perez put the Lions on the board in the 48th minute with a penalty kick goal into the right corner. The game was a physical match throughout, playing to a similar tenor as the first meeting between the programs earlier this season.

Florida Memorial head coach Anna Maliszewska made a handful of adjustments – some just because the team's roster was shorter than it was the last time they faced the Tigers – and they paid off as her team played their best defensive game of the season.

The Lions will try to create a winning streak Thursday (Oct. 28) when they host Keiser University at 11 a.m. at Dr. Lester Brown Park.
